Inch by inch, row by row.

So, a little bit of the “love story”. Many years ago I was given a David Mallett cassette by my college friend, Cindy, who lives in NH. I loved The Garden Song. Then I heard Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie sing it in concert, which made me love it even more. I even added it to the song book at Falcon Camp.

Falcon is a camp in Ohio owned and run by my brother, David, since 1984. I was the Assistant Director for 5 years. It used to be owned by a member of Bill’s church, so Bill worked there as a kid, even when he was on crutches after a motorcycle accident his senior year of high school. The weekend I met Bill, he had come to Falcon, which was a sometime thing for alumnae. (You work around camp and stay for a day or two in one of the cabins.)

One afternoon I saw this guy, walking around camp with a guitar, singing The Garden Song. I asked who he was and followed him out of the lodge. He was, of course, my dear, sweet, Bill. We talked for hours that evening down by the dock. He had learned The Garden Song at a Pete and Arlo concert he had recently attended and decided to learn it. The morning after we met, Bill serenaded me outside my cabin and that weekend he shared the first 2 of the 3 index cards below with new verses for The Garden Song. The 3rd card followed. That was it. Love. ❤️
